    Best knife for the money.

Posted by Erick on 29th Jun 2020

Love this knife! Sharp D2 blade and it was perfectly centered and no play, G10 scales, great size and weight for EDC, and a lifetime warranty.

Only a couple of issues. Clip isn't that great. It's deep but can be hard pulling out of the pocket. I found that if you pull from the tip of the clip, it slides out easily. Also, the flipper starts to hurt your finger tip after about 20-30 consecutive flips. The detent is strong but I put a few drops of Blue Lube around the pivot and now it flips and closes easily. I had a Bugout that I didn't like at all. For $150, it was flexi, gritty, and felt like it could break in your hand. Not this knife. This one is so solid, I'm gonna buy the other ODGrn G10 and S35VN models too. I already ordered the blacked-out version direct from SOG.

For $50, this knife is a steal!

Wow I am really impressed with this knife and the direction that SOG is heading. Love the design and crimson G10 scales and the D2 blade is razor sharp also the action upon deployment is fantastic great customer service and fast shipping

Good design and material but lacking in execution

Posted by Eric K on 6th Jun 2020

While I certainly like the design and the material what this knife is lacking is execution.

Blade: Uneven grind and noticeable up-and-down blade play when closed with slight pressure on the flipper tab. I had to loosen the pivot slightly to get smooth deployment and ended up with a noticeble side to side blade play.

XR Lock: There is annoying friction between plastic XR lockbar cap and the steel liner.

Other than the issues above, this knife feels smaller in hand than it really is.

Reviews online are mostly good but you'll be able to find a knife with similar material with better execution for the same price range.

Great blade and handle material. Poor fit and finish

Posted by Eric K on 4th Jun 2020

I was super excited about getting this knife. It was going to be my first red G10 and a D2 blade. I do own a few M390, S30V, S35VN, 20CV, but this was going to be my go-to small EDC.

Right out of the box, and on the first attempted "flip" it failed to deploy completely, then again, and again.. Out of a couple hundred attempts in the last 24 hours or so successful deployment rate with the flipper tab has been more or less about 30%.

I keep up with all the big YT knife reviewers and they all gave it a good review, to their surprise and mine. Don't get me wrong, this is a GREAT looking knife. But this is by far the worst action I have seen in a knife in the past four years of buying pocket knives.

The materials are good: D2 blade and red G10 scales. But once I place the slightest pressure on the flipper tab (when closed) there is a noticeable clicky sensation, similar to clicking a mouse. It had me wondering what it was for the first couple hours. It turns out that there is a bit of a play in the detent, XR locking mechanism, where a pressure is released from it once i place a slight pressure on the flipper tab. It had me going crazy because it really felt like the handle was not tightened down all the way and the scales were moving slightly with each attempt to deploy the blade. But all the screws were seated properly and tight.

The blade was very dull out of the box, it didn't even come close to passing a paper cut test. One side of the blade seemed to be sharpened at a different angle than the other.

One of the major flaw seems to be their XR locking mechanism: there seems to be too much friction between the XR lockbar and the blade during deployment that it keeps it from being smooth or successful. Upon folding the knife there is notable friction between the the plastic piece that covers the XR lock bar and the metal liner that leave much be desired.

I do not plan on returning the knife as when there is less than optimal action on a new knife I purchase, I tend to do a full disassembly, clean, relubricate, and reassemble them (not recommended as disassembly will void your warranty).

The frustration with this knife continues to build with each deployment (and closing) of this knife. Of the six knife purchases I have made in the past two months, this is THE purchase that I'd take back. Maybe I just got one from a bad batch and should have returned it after a couple tries at deployment...

(Just for the record. I have no complaints against WMK. The purchase process has been flawless each time and shipping remains fast)
