    Outdated and underwhelmed

Posted by Richard Lebo on 16th Nov 2022

I heard so many positive things about the Sebenza, and since it is an iconc and historic knife I thought I would give it a try. Now don’t get me wrong, this is a very good knife. Mine came with a nice and slicey factory edge, great fit and finish, and no lock rock. I just feel in 2022 that there are better options available at this price point, and some of the design choices are outdated.

One example of the aforementioned is the flimsy pocket clip. I am fine with a clip that is not deep carry, but the retention of the factory clip is poor and is easily bent. I immediately ordered a replacement clip. The factory clip is hard to remove. The screw comes out easily, but the clip felt like it was glued on and deformed slightly when trying to remove it. I like my new 3d titanium clip much better.

I also am not a fan of prioritizing a lanyard over a pocket clip. This causes a less than favorable placement of the pocket clip on the side, not the middle. This issue is compounded by having to offset the angle of the clip so it does not rest on the lock bar. This is not the most natural position to carry a knife with a clip.

I am also afraid to remove the lanyard since the lanyard pin would become free spinning with a rattle. There are hacks to fix that or the pin can be removed, but at this price point and the number of years the knife has been in production there is no real excuse for these types of issues.

So in the end I bought a very good historic knife from a high quality USA company, but I also feel that given the price I am a bit underwhelmed and do not feel I should have to tweak or hack it to make it more comfortable and carry better. I am still keeping the knife because at the end of the day it has a great blade and is a highly durable user, but I wish CRK would make some improvements so the knife would have a better balance of iconic design and modern use.
