    Veery good heat treat

Posted by Unknown on 1st Nov 2023

Initially, the action on this knife was a bit gritty and the detent seemed too strong - could not middle finger flick it without real effort. However, these issues did lessen quite a bit after the knife was broken in. The blade does flick out with authority both ways now (using thumb or middle finger), but given that the detent remains fairly strong, I am hopeful that the stop pin can take the cumulative impact long-term (so far it has held up well after probably hundreds of flicks). The ergos of this knife are very comfortable and the smoothness of the scales have not really presented any issues for me during use. The blade shape is beautiful and very useful, with a decent belly and a very accessible (and sharp) tip for draw cuts. The satin finish on the blade is also very pretty. The one minor gripe I have is that the factory edge seemed to come with a rather obtuse angle. Since I tend to take the lazy way of sharpening along the factory edge angle, that angle quickly became even more obtuse and at one point the blade seemed to refuse to get sharp, which was concerning. Then I realized that I probably had to reprofile the cutting edge, which I did with a DMT extra coarse sharpener (with diamond coating). Even with such a good tool, reprofiling this blade was a bear, and I don't think I am done with this task yet, although to my relief the effort did bring back the screaming sharp edge of this knife. The plus side is that the blade seems to have been well heat treated to a relatively high hardness for 14C28N - my guesstimate, based on using many knives with HRC ranging from 57-63, is that the Qubit blade is at or close to 60 - which would explain why reprofiling took some effort. So additional kudos go to Civivi for not cutting corners on the heat treat on top of everything else that they did right on this model.
