    Excellent knife for the money

Posted by Lacey S. Cuttinglaceedc on 16th Sep 2023

This knife absolutely feels like a more premium knife then the cost will lead you to believe. In hand this knife feels every bit the quality of your 350-400 dollar Ti China made knives. Now I'm not a person that will typically buy China knives that are over 75 dollars as to me that's the cut off of where the value in China knives is. Once China made knives get in to premium powder steels to me that is where they stop being a great value. I'm a steel nerd, anyone that knows me knows that I'm in to the steel/heat treat preformance and sharpening experience much more then I am the action or looks of a knife. Kubey is literally the only China brand that I will buy knives from that are in powder steels, they consistently put out knives that have a great heat treat and aren't ran on the soft side. I can say with absolute certainty that the S90V on these knives has a Excellent heat treat, the steel reacts to the stones exactly as I expect we'll dine s90v to react, this is not no soft s90v, I have two and had both poked by a friend that owns a large machine shop with a commercial HRC testing machine. He PMI both knives for me and they are indeed S90V (I would not expect kubey to mislabel a steel they are a solid company) and both knives tested at 60.8hrc and 61.3. Each knife was poked 3 times and that's an average over the three pokes. The knife design is excellent, it's a large knife that fits the hand well and the forward finger choil is excellent as is the action of both the samples I have. The blade shape is great and it's a fantastic cutter, the only issue I have with the design is that it needed to be a taller blade. Because of how short the flat grind is this knife gets thick behind the edge extremely fast! It's about 21thou behind the edge with the factory edge, after one sharpening and laying it back to 17 degrees per side you will be around 24thou BTE so not great but not bad... the problem is going to be after 3 or 4 sharpenings you will be around 28-30 thousandths behind the edge and that's just to thick for a knife like this. I love this knife but it's clear that the design was more to be appealing to the eye then it was to be a high performance cutting tool. That's not to say it's a bad design, in fact it's so good that I own two! It's just something they should have considered when making the knife and thinking about sharpening life. This is an extremely high quality knife and the design should have kept the blade taller so it didn't thicken up so quickly. Imho this knife shouldn't have been a flat grind unless they made the blade taller! With the way the blade is ground this knife should have been a deep hollow grind. I really wish designers would start looking at a knife with sharpening in mind. If you are putting out a high quality piece that will last some one many many years then that knife needs to be able to be sharpened many times and not developing the cutting geometry of an axe after 2-3 sharpenings. This is a lovely design and it looks great but I can wholly say that this knife was designed with form over function and that isn't something I like to see in a pocket knife. Now remember I'm someone that is speaking from the view of a steel nerd and geometry geek! I want knives to cut like a Lazer and be all about the blade. This knife has wonderful action, wonderful looks, wonderful fit and finish and a great high performance steel with a solid heat treat... the only thing that's keeping it from being a 10 out of 10 at its price point is its short flat grind (and it not being usa made of course but at this price that can't count against it) and how fast it thickens up after sharpening. If you get this knife you will have a good slicer for the factory edge and 1 possibly 2 sharpenings and then it's going to get more and more wedge like with each subsequent sharpening until by the 4-5 sharpening it will be so thick that it's basically unusable.

What I really want is a full Ti and S90V Kubey Nova.. if kubey makes that happen that knife will be the best knife one can touch at this price if it's priced like this one. Kubey is putting out great s90v and well done Ti. With the lovely geometry of the Nova that would make one heck of a high preformance slicer!

Sorry for the story book long post, I just want to be detailed.
