10 Things You’ll Love About WE Knife Company’s Banter
17th Apr 2023
WE Knife company, which produces high-end Chinese knives from select materials and premium steels, has made some waves in the past few years or so due to its quality products and limited editions.
Thanks to a commitment to seriously high quality control and unique designs, WE Knife company, like Artisan Cutlery, Kizer, and CIVIVI, has made serious inroads into flipping the negative stigma associated with Chinese-made knives in the minds of most American consumers.
Take the WE Banter, for instance, which for a variety of good reasons is the best-selling WE Knife on our website.
Here are the things others love about it - which you will too.
There’s a Banter for Every Taste, Preference, and Personality
Do you want a baby blue Banter? Something that’s all black with a black stonewash blade?
Perhaps an olive green or an all-gray Banter?
There’s one for you. They’re available in several sizes, colors, finishes, and configurations, so whatever appeals to you, you can get it in a Banter.
It’s Sized Perfectly for Everyday Carry
Everyman’s Banter just happens to be perfectly sized for EDC.
The classic Banter is 6.52” overall, with a 3.62” blade, which puts it perfectly in the middle of the spectrum. It is neither large nor small.
At 2.86oz, it won’t weigh down your pocket or your packet, and since it features a lanyard hole and a pocket clip, it’s easy to carry, too.
The Plain Aesthetics
The Banter doesn’t overdo anything. It has pretty boxy lines and a textbook generic spear point blade.
Does it flash like a karambit or a jambiya? Definitely not.
But can it cut, pry, chisel, scrape, pierce, and lift? Easily.
It’s Not Overengineered
It’s admirable that so many knife manufacturers are jumping on the bandwagon of pocket cleavers and Wharncliffe style blades, super steels, and information age lock types.
But some things just work, and this is one of those designs that does. It’s not trying too hard. It is what it is and it’s the better for it.
The Super Steel
Everyman’s Banter is made with CPM-S35VN super steel. With 1.4% carbon, 2% molybdenum, 3% vanadium, 14% chromium, and half a percent of niobium, S35VN offers a unique balance of traits.
Chiefly, it is ridiculously strong and hard. It’s not likely to roll or chip or snap, and with a Rockwell hardness of 59 to 61, it’s going to hold an edge for a long, long time.
The downside is that it’s really hard to sharpen. But when you get that edge it’s going to stay there.
Also, with all that chromium in the alloy, S35VN happens to be very corrosion-resistant, too.
It’s Basically Maintenance-Free
In addition to featuring a blade of CMP super steel, the basic Banter is made with G10 scales.
As you may know, G10 is non-absorbent, basically UV-stable, and effectively non-reactive. It will not rot, rust, chip, splinter, fade, or flake.
It, along with Micarta, is about as tough a synthetic as can be produced, and requires effectively no maintenance.
It’s Available in Several Sizes
The Banter is not only available in a smaller size, the Baby Banter, but in a larger size, the unsurprisingly (and uninspiringly) named “Big Banter” as well.
The Baby Banter preserves all of the basic features and functions of the Banter, just in a smaller size. The main difference is the blade steel, which is Nitro V. This alloy, which features as much as .11% nitrogen, has excellent hardenability and corrosion resistance.
Typically, nitrogen is an undesirable inclusion in steel alloy as it makes it brittle; however, Nitro V’s unique chemistry enables this alloy to deliver excellent edge retention and corrosion resistance without excessive brittleness.
The Big Banter, like the Baby Banter, preserves most of the features and functions of the original, except this one is made with 20CV (another super steel) and a Micarta handle.
All three variants are good for what they’re made for, and they let you practice discretion as to whether you want a larger or a smaller blade.
The Silky Smooth Action
The WE Knife Banter is made with a caged ceramic ball bearing action that needs almost no break in. Trust us, this thing is smooth, and it does not get old. It’s also a really fidgety knife.
The Fact That It’s Not Flashy
For better or worse, the world we live in forces some of us to place a premium on knives and other tools that don’t draw attention to themselves.
The WE Banter is a knife you can easily carry most places without alarming, well, you know, the alarmists.
The Affordable Pricing
Finally, if there’s something else you’ll appreciate about the WE Banter it’s the price. These are affordable knives by any stretch, with the standard Banter costing around $110, with prices of $65 or so more in line for the Baby Banter.
