Button Lock Bliss: 5 Great CJRB Knives

Button Lock Bliss: 5 Great CJRB Knives

18th Mar 2024

CJRB Knives have been a hit ever since they were released by Artisan Cutlery just about 5 years ago. Brand new on the knife scene, this brand is one for the ages.

The brand works with the knife industry’s greats and already has several highly-acclaimed designs like the Maileah, Ria, and Feldspar that utilize quality knife scale materials and blade steels. (Check out our WMK Exclusive Feldspar with CF handles and M390 blades, while you’re here.)

But, beyond these, there are so many other CJRB knives that have been well-received. The company has pioneered the use of new alloys and technology, one aspect of the latter which will be on display here: the button lock.

Though not new, button lock knives are great because button locks are strong and keep your hands and fingers out of the path of the blade when closing. They are also very hard to accidentally disengage.

So, with no further ado, here are 5 great CJRB knives that sport a button lock mechanism.

CJRB Pyrite Ultem

                   CJRB Pyrite

The original CJRB Pyrite with a drop point blade was popular enough - so popular, in fact, that it spawned a series of offshoots, including the Pyrite Ultem, named after its unique handle material.

Like the original CJRB Pyrite, this successor is made with an AR-RPM9 blade with a flat grind that makes it great for slicing and dicing.

Unlike the original, this version of the perennially-popular Pyrite has a wharncliffe style blade which has extra tip strength and thumb holes which are inherently ambidextrous.

Also unlike the original, it has a handle made of Ultem, a “polyetherimide” material that is semi-transparent and extremely high-strength. It is also astonishingly resistant to high temperatures; apparently, Ultem can survive multiple cycles in an autoclave (a steam-sterilization device commonly used in the medical and chemical industries).

CJRB Pyrite Aluminum

                      CJRB Pyrite

Love the Pyrite, but want a sleeker, more classic look? Then go with a CJRB Pyrite aluminum version.

This is basically a facsimile of the Pyrite Ultem, except that it has aluminum scales. Aluminum, by the way, is extremely light, strong, corrosion-resistant, and is more or less maintenance free.

All of the other specifications are basically the same, down to the wharncliffe blade and thumb holes. This one just has a more austere, neutral finish.

CJRB Mica

                     CJRB Pyrite

Love the basic aesthetics and function of the CJRB Pyrite, but want it in a smaller package? Go with a CJRB Mica.

Available with a wide range of differently colored aluminum handle scales (and carbon fiber) and with a practical, no-nonsense 2.17” AR-RPM9 blade with a flat grind, it’s hard not to love the indelibly utilitarian air of the Mica.

Everything about it is perfect for everyday carry. It is compact yet capable, fidget friendly, and has high-quality jimping along the spine for a sure grip. It’s not too small that it will balk at tough jobs but it’s also small enough so that it doesn’t look intimidating, which is a great quality in a folding knife.

Plus, you have the button lock to work with, which is safe, strong, and user friendly. It’s like the Pyrite, but in a scaled-down package.

CJRB Mica Mini (Pictured at Top of Article)

Believe it or not, CJRB actually makes a mini version of the Mica, which is just a hair smaller than the original, with a 2.14” blade. Everything else is basically the same, though, down to the blade steel and handle dimensions. Definitely another great CJRB knife to take a look at if you like the Pyrite and Mica but are serious about tiny workhorses, because that’s just what this is.

CJRB Chord

                 CJRB Pyrite

Alright, now let’s flip the script. If you like the CJRB Pyrite but want something a little bigger, tougher, and ever-so-slightly flashier, the CJRB Chord is where it’s at.

It’s just a hair bigger than the original Pyrite, with a 3.47” blade (the Pyrite sports a 3.13” blade), and whereas the Pyrite slings a humble drop point, the Chord has a more aggressive drop point (almost clipped) with a flipper tab that fills the role of a choil when the knife is opened.

The Chord also has more aggressively molded handle scales, with a grooved belly and a boxy shape that allow for a strong grip and plenty of purchase regardless of conditions. It’s available here in a few different colors of G10 and Micarta, along with a skeletonized version.

Otherwise, the Chord has a lot of what the Pyrite also has going for it: AR-RPM9 steel, a button lock, easy deployment around a buttery-smooth ceramic ball bearing pivot mechanism, and general durability and practicality.
