Vosteed Knives Valkyrie Review: Gray G10 Handle, 154CM Blade

5th Sep 2023

Vosteed Knives, founded according to the maxim “Stay sharp, stay wild,” despite being hardly 2 years old, is committed to producing high-quality knives using top-tier blade steels and materials, according to unique, novel designs, some of which tip a hat to historical forerunners.

Among the best-received Vosteed knives has been the Valkyrie, which we offer here in several configurations. This review will let you get up close and personal with the Valkyrie ST with gray G10 scales and a 154CM blade.

Things We Love About This Vosteed Knives Valkyrie

The Vosteed Valkyrie offers a lot to love, not only for collectors but for sportsmen, craftsmen, and anyone else looking for a quality EDC knife. We broke them all down here.

The Blade Steel

The blade steel is a winner for this Vosteed Valkyrie. It’s 154CM, which is a modified version of 440C martensitic stainless steel that offers better hardenability characteristics.

Originally developed for jet engine turbine components, 154CM contains 1.05% carbon, 14% chromium, and 4% molybdenum, along with traces of vanadium, manganese, and tungsten (all around .5%).

The carbon, tungsten and vanadium all improve hardenability, whereas the tungsten, vanadium, and molydebum improve toughness and wear resistance.

As for the chromium, it makes this steel much more corrosion-resistant.

All in all, an excellent blade steel for EDC that will take and hold a sharp edge while bucking corrosion.

The Blade Profile

                        Vosteed Knives

Blade profile is another big winner here in the Valkyrie ST. It’s a sheepsfoot blade that perhaps draws a smidgen of inspiration from the classical seax or sax, a similar knife once carried by Germanic peoples throughout northern Europe.

Some sheepsfoot blades are more oblique, though, than others, and this one retains a fairly fine point. This makes it perfect for piercing and carving, unlike some other, blunter blades.

At the same time, the basic blade profile strengthens the blade near the tip, helping to minimize the risk of tip breakage.

The profile also maintains a generous amount of belly for slicing and carving.

The Handle Scales

The handle scales are another big win, being made from hard, dense, strong G10.

G10 might not score well on aesthetics, but it is maintenance-free (unlike natural handle scales) impervious to corrosion, and will not rot even if it gets wet or greasy.

The adequately textured scales also offer a sure grip, even in adverse conditions, or if very cold. Also, good to know is that while metal scales can be dangerous to handle without gloves in extreme cold, the same doesn’t apply to these synthetic scales.

The Ergonomics

                  Vosteed Knives

Take a look at this Vosteed knife. It looks pretty basic, but one of the areas in which we give it high marks is in ergonomics.

There are none of those graceful curves that adorn Karambit-style knife handles or modern designs, and things are a bit boxy.

But you know what? It works. The handles are comfortable and there are no hot spots, and the whole thing offers a sure grip.

There’s even a little divot near the front of the scales that serves sort of like a choil when the knife is open, improving both indexing and grip.

You might call the gray tone boring, but we call it austere - and there are folks who will appreciate that.

The Reversible Pocket Clip

The Vosteed Valkyie is built for deep, tip-up carry. But take a look at the image above; see that slot machined in the base of the scales?

That’s there so you can flip the clip to either side of the blade, so you can carry on whatever side you want.

Deployment Options

Another thing we like about these Vosteed knives is that they offer two options for deployment, and are both right and left-friendly on two counts.

They include both a flipper mechanism as well as dual thumb studs.

The Action and Button Lock

                 Vosteed Knives

The actions of these Vosteed knives are silk-smooth out of the box and the button lock is just one more thing to love.

Vosteed calls it a Trek Lock, but we know (and you know) it’s a button lock.

These lock types have been growing in popularity in recent years, but the hype is worth it. Button locks are extremely strong, reliable, and safer (your fingers are out of the way when opening and closing the blade).

They’re also very fidget friendly. Another great thing about this design is that there is a recess cut into the scales where the button rides, which helps minimize the risk of accidental lock disengagement while using the knife.

The Overall Size and Weight

We also love the overall size and weight of these Vosteed knives, as they’re great for everything from EDC to camping to hiking to keeping as a trunk or tool box knife.

They’re 7.62” overall with a 3.26” blade, and only weigh 3.39oz. They’re small enough to comfortable carry just about anywhere but not too small that you can’t use them for tough tasks.

This makes them excellent all-purpose Vosteed knives.

The All-Gray Aesthetic

The all-gray aesthetic is something that - though we recognize not everyone will agree - we love about these knives.

It’s demure, humble, stately, and significant all at once. Too many knives are meant to catch your eye. These are made simply to perform.
